Murray Perahia

Murray Perahia (born the April 19th 1947 with New York) is a Pianiste and American Leader .

Today, Perahia is regarded as one of the largest traditional pianists in life.

Biography

Its beginnings

Although having started to play of the piano as of the 4 years age, Perahia starts to study it seriously only around 15 years. It enters at 17 years to the Mannes College, where it studies the instrument, the direction of orchestra, and the composition with Mieczysław Horszowski. The summer, it follows the teaching of Marlboro College, where it studies inter alia with Rudolf Serkin and Pablo Casals. In 1972, it gains the contest Leeds, which causes to sit its reputation of young talent. On a purely anecdotic basis, Fanny Waterman declared ( Piano Competition: The Story off the Leeds , by Wendy Thompson) that Horszowski had prevented little before the competition that it would bring the winner of it. This advertisement of the participation of Perahia would have caused the abandonment of other American candidates.

In 1973 it collaborates with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears in the Festival of Aldeburgh. He becomes artistic deputy manager in 1981 about it, and this until in 1989.

The first recordings of importance that Perahia realizes are the integral of the concertos for piano of Mozart, with the British Chamber Orchestrated directed with the piano. In the Eighties, it also records the entirety of the concertos for piano of Beethoven, with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra directed by Bernard Haitink.

Perahia is dependant of a close friendship with Vladimir Horowitz. This last will have on him a major influence.

In margin of its activity of pianist soloist, Perahia collaborates regularly with the Guarneri Quartet and the Budapest Quartet. He is also the principal chief invited of the orchestra of the Academy off St Martin in the Fields, with which he records and gives representations.

Years 1990: health issue

In 1992, the career of Perahia is threatened by the discovery of an osseous malformation on the level of its inch. It is operated but ignitions start and move away it during several years from the piano. During this period, it is dedicated to a thorough study of Johann Sebastian Bach. As of medical agreement, it records towards end of the year 90 a series of works for piano of Bach, accommodated very well in the musical world. Its interpretation of the Variations Goldberg is regarded as being one of best, while Perahia was essential like one of the large specialists in Bach.

It, thereafter, recorded studies of Chopin, as well as the last sonatas for piano of Schubert.

Today

Today in 2006, he lives with London. The March 8th 2004, the Reine Elizabeth II ordered it honorary Knight Commander off the British Empire .

At the beginning of 2006, the health issues of Perahia reappeared, again moving away it from the scene. Several representations with the Barbican of London were cancelled, as well as a round in ten cities of the United States. In October 2006, Perahia could take again its rounds. It gives a series of representations in various towns of Germany, of which Hamburg where it is a real success.
