Murray Hill

Murray Hill is a district of the island of Manhattan to New York, whose name comes from the Murray family, of the merchants Quakers who worked in the maritime transport. Murray Hill is located at the south-east of the district of Midtown, at the edge of the East River. It is a residential enclave where one can still find many residences of the 19th century intact.

History

Robert Murray (1721-1786), the household head, is born in Pennsylvania and comes to New York in 1753 after a short stay in North Carolina. He is established as merchant in 1762 and rents at the city a house and a farm, on a ground which extends on the raised zone, compared to the remainder of the island, ranging between the current avenues Madison and Lexington, and the 33e with 39e street. Murray like to receive other notable city. It is claimed that at the time of the attack of the Britanniques to Kips Bay the September 15th 1776, after having put in rout the American army, the British general Sir William Howe was invited to take the at Murray, which made it possible the rebellious forces to gather in the north of Manhattan and to gain the following day the battle “Tops of Harlem”.

When Robert Murray died in 1786, his/her John brother became owner, whereas his/her son Lindley Murray had exiled himself in Great Britain following the Guerre of Independence. John decided that its field would equitably be distributed between his/her children.

In 1847, the Murray heirs - who had several batches of ground in the district - made pressure on the town of New York so that one does not introduce there a railway line and that their residential paradise is not threatened. An agreement was found, whereas the municipality envisaged the opening of avenues and streets according to the layout with right angle which one now knows in New York. This instrument is called the Murray Hill Restriction , which limits constructions to “brick or stone dwellings”. Y were for example prohibited: forging mills, breweries, zoos. Thus, in second half of the 19th century, Murray Hill became very required by middle-class customers for her peace. The district only started to change appearance when the first scrape-sky made their appearance in the Années 1920. But a continuous association to fight to preserve the old residences and to prevent that one builds new buildings of purely commercial use.
