Mureaux

Mureaux are a common department of the Yvelines, in the area Île-de-France, in France, located at approximately 18 km in the east of Mantes-the-Pretty and at 39 km in the west of Paris. It is an industrial town located in edge of the Seine, opposite Meulan and Hardricourt.

The name of Mureaux comes from the Latin murelli , the walls.

The inhabitants are called the Muriautin (E) S .

Geography

The commune of Mureaux extends in the low alluvial plain from the the Seine, on left bank of the river, to 50 m of altitude approximately. It is bordering on the Flins-on-Seine in the west, Bouafle and Ecquevilly in the south and on Verneuil-sur-Seine and Chapet in the east. In north, it is separated from Meulan and Hardricourt by the Seine which crosses a road bridge, the large bridge “the Rhine and the Danube” builds in 1957.

The city of Mureaux lays out of a station served by the railway line Paris Saint-Lazare - Mantes-the-Pretty via Poissy, and is also served by the highway of Normandy (A13). The commune has an aerodrome with enherbée track.

History

The site was occupied as of prehistory; a megalithic burial (shady walk) gone back to 3000 years before J. - C. was discovered at the end of the 19th century.

With the the Middle Ages, the village was a stronghold of the counts de Meulan.

17th century: construction of the castle of Bècheville (transformed into 1977 in arts center).

1843: inauguration of the station on the line Paris-Rouen.

1902: beginnings of aviation with Mureaux.

1952: flight of the first Noratlas, military transport aircraft manufactured by the factory of Mureaux.

In the years 1950 and 1960, construction of great units of social housing, in particular in the park of the castle of Bècheville, acquired by the city in 1953.

Culture

Architectural heritage

  • Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church: construction finished in 1896, carried out in Style neogothic.
  • Club house of the circle of veil of Paris: built in 1893.
  • Castle of Bècheville of the XVIIe century. Attended by the writer Stendhal in 1811, altered at the 19th century, it is today the center of arts of the city.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Frederic Dart, novelist and father of San-Antonio, lived there of 1948 to 1968. The cinema of Mureaux bears from now on its name.
  • Laurent Romejko, TV host, was born there and there lived.
