Murder Incorporated is the name given by the American journalists to an organization of the Italian-American Mafia, ordered by Louis Lepke Buchalter, responsible for the assassination of its members having made a fault or not very sure, and being revealed in 1940 by the prosecutor of New York, Burton Turkus, thanks to the testimony of the killer Abe Reles.

The invention of the sub-contracted assassination

During the creation of the Commission, executive council of the Italian-American Maffia, it was agreed to prohibit the assassination without authorization of any police officer, public personality of importance, such as the judges, or even of anonymities external with the Maffia, to avoid all grabuge which had been able to give birth to from the investigations even pushed a national mobilization against the crime. On the other hand, it was authorized to be made justice between members of the organized crime, provided that the sentence, for little that it carries to consequence, is endorsed by the Commission (executive council of the American Mafia, also called Syndicat of the crime). It is all at the same time to decide in a way centralized of this " salt boulot" and to reduce of them the risks which was set up Murder Incorporated (baptized thus by the press), kind of mutual insurance company of the assassination thanks to which a local leader profited from time to others during a few days from the services of killers not located by the local police because pertaining to the team from another chief, to which it returned the similar one.

Operation

Murder Incorporated was managed jointly by Bugsy Siegel, Albert Anastasia and Louis Lepke Buchalter. Collecting the requests and choosing the method of the executions, they called sometimes upon killers " freelance" , but especially with a group of young Jewish gangsters and Italian based with Brownsville, a district of Brooklyn and paid at the year. Most famous of them were Louis Capone, Harry " Happy" Maïone, Frank " Dasher" (" the flèche") Abbadando, Vito Gurino, Mendy Weiss, Harry Strauss (known as " Pittsburgh Phil"), Martin " Bugsy" Goldstein and Abe " Kid Twist" Reles, the leader of the band. The nickname of this last (" the kid who tord"), born in 1907 Austrian Jewish parents, came from its youthful face and its faculty to twist the neck of its victims. It was by him that this machinery of death was put at the great day. It would have caused, until there, between 300 and 700 assassinations (by revolver, cord or ice pick), according to the estimates, of 1933 to 1940.

The revealed monster

In January 1940, Abe Reles and Bugsy Goldstein went to the office of police force on convocation, without suspecting that the unhoped-for deposition of a witness of an old business of murder was likely to cost them their heads. Two months later, Abe Reles decided to betray while passing a market with the district attorney (prosecutor) of the State of New York, Bill O' Dwyer (future mayor of New York City) and its assistant Burton Turkus. He proposed to them to reveal the existence and the operation of Murder Incorporated , up to that point unknown, and to denounce his accomplices, including his chief, Lepke Buchalter. This one in prison (just like Luciano, fallen for procuring in 1936), was then already stopped for drug trafficking by the FBI in April 1939, after being accused for racket by the prosecutor Thomas Dewey (Buchalter had made carry out tens of potential witnesses to avoid a judgment).

Lawsuit and executions

The " song of the canari" (denouncement of a traitor in slang of the Medium), leads to the lawsuit of the best killers of Murder Incorporated. Bugsy Goldstein, Pittsburg Phil, Happy Maïone, Dasher Abbadando, Louis Capone and Mendy Weiss were installed on the electric chair. Since his hiding-place, Albert Anastasia organized a vast fatal purging to avoid the appearance of new witnesses being able to compromise the owners of the Syndicat of the crime. In November 1941, Abe Reles, in spite of the important security measures surrounding it, was défenestré top of a hotel of Long Island where he was imprisoned, before testifying against Anastasia (the future repented Joe Valachi revealed that it was a murder made with the assistance of the one of the police officers keeping Reles). That did not prevent Lepke Buchalter from sitting down in its turn on the electric chair in March 1944, thanks to the testimony of another killer, Allie Tannenbaum. It is to date the only chief of the Maffia American to be carried out by justice.
