History

Muraz, commune of France, seem to draw the origin from its name of walls, insinuation walls in ruins or vestiges of constructions, of rustic but walled dwellings, its old C-W communication being Mura.

Its history is badly known, because depending at the same time on the chapter of the Stiffs of Geneva and the priory of Peillonnex, who had strongholds until 1791 there and hardly files left.

However the settlement must be rather old, to judge some by the discovered vestiges in the vicinity. The village of the Small cross located at 1.200 m is the most point of the commune where one finds blocks erratic; they were deposited, there is more than 20.000 years, by the glacier of Arve. One found important traces of metallurgical exploitation of the iron age (750-50 av. J. - C.); there old a Gallic oppidum, strengthened village of the time of Allobroges, could be located.

The church is dedicated to Saint Martin, which indicates a great seniority. In 1532, it was destroyed by a fire; on the lintel of the door of the bell-tower, one finds engraved the weapons of the family Gerbaix de Sonnaz (field of a Gallo-Roman named Solo) and goes back it to 1532. The current building, from neo-gothic style, goes back to 1885. In the wall of the chorus, on the right of the high altar, is embedded a stone decorated with decorative reasons in the shape of interlacing and dating from the Carolingian time.

Two layers of the Sardinian Map, whose original goes back to 1730, are exposed in the room of the Council of the Town hall.
