Muraenidae

The murenes are fish anguiliformes. One counts approximately 200 species distributed in 15 kinds. The greatest species, the Strophidon sathete , jusquà measurement 4 m length. The majority measure approximately 1m50.

Description

Murénidés are characterized by the absence of even fins, the skin without scales smooth and thick as well as a very narrow opercular slit. The murene has a body anguilliforme, robust and slightly compressed laterally, especially in its posterior part. The head is short, massive, with profile curvature. The teeth are long and pointed. The pectoral and ventral fins are absent; the dorsal is prolonged without discontinuity by the fins and the tail.

Certain murenes (of the kind will retifera ) have a second pair of jaws located in the back of the throat and which can advance in the oral cavity at the time of the capture of a prey, thus allowing its swallowing.

The family of Muraenidae comprises many species, divided into two subfamilies Muraeninae and Uropterygiinae
