Munot

The Munot is an imposing construction belonging to the Fortification S of the town of Schaffhouse in the Canton of Schaffhouse Suisse. The fortress dominates the old city, it was a long time the symbol of the power of the Rhenish city.

History of construction

  • November 6th 1563 the Council of the city decides to build a news Forteresse of Artillerie.

  • 1564 beginning of construction
  • 1589 completion of work

History

The power of artillery having made considerable progresses lasting the 25 years of its construction, the utility of the Munot was questioned as of the completion of work.

In 1799 the Munot is occupied by the French troops.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Munot lost any strategic importance and was transformed into career.

In 1826, on the initiative of Johann Jakob Beck (1786-1868), professor of drawing at the cantonal school, one began the restoration of the work.

The fortress can be visited according to the following schedules:

  • May 1st at September 30th: 8:00 - 20h
  • October 1st at April 30th: 9:00 - 17h

  • with foot: 15 min. from the station
  • in the car: to the carpark " Munot"
