Municipal elections in Besancon

The municipal elections with Besancon allow the election of the mayor and the 54 city council men. Indeed, any commune whose population lies between: 100000 and: 149999 inhabitants is managed by a Municipal council composed of fifty five elected officials. The city with exceeded them: 100000 inhabitants in 1963 and is thus in this configuration since the municipal elections of 1965.

Mandates exercised since the post-war period

Municipal election of 2008

  • Seulement three candidates are invested today officially by their party:

  • Jean-Louis Fousseret (PS) will try to maintain its post of mayor acquired into 2001 vis-a-vis Jean Rosselot (RPR). The outgoing mayor, Jean-Louis Fousseret, only candidate with the nomination, were designated by the militants of the Socialist party of Besancon to lead the municipal list in March 2008. Moreover, agreements seem to have taken place between various political trainings of the Left to introduce an one applicant, the outgoing mayor Mr. J.L. Fousseret, with the municipal elections 2008. Its program will be proposed with the residents of Besancon as from January 2008. It should be noted that the Greens had obtained in 2001 with the first turn a very high score for this party (16.05%) thanks to Eric Alauzet.

  • Of with dimensions of the UMP it is Jean Rosselot who was designated as the official candidate of the right party. It should be noted that only one month earlier it was the senator and former president of the District council Jean-François Humbert which was preferred by the National Commission vis-a-vis Jean Rosselot. Indeed, neither one nor the other seems to achieve truly the unanimity in the right party: if the first seems preferred by the UMP militants because profiting from important statutes (Regional adviser of Franche-Comté and senator of the Doubs), the second seems more popular near the Residents of Besancon. The names of the two deputies of the Besancon-native districts, Francoise Branget and Jacques Grosperrin had also been evoked.

  • the UDF-Modem officially indicated Philippe Gonon which announced to carry out an independent list and open.

  • It seems that vis-a-vis a linked left, the victory for the line, which more is divided, is difficult right now in this socialist bastion since more than one half-century when Ségolène Royal arrived at the head at the first (31,26%) then at the second (53%) turn of the presidential election 2007.

Municipal election of 2001

The municipal elections of 2001 with Besancon, which took place March 11th and 18th, made it possible to elect the successor of Robert Schwint (PS), leaving his vacant seat after four consecutive mandates and 24 years of being able (1977-2001), imitating its predecessor Jean Minjoz, him so socialist and mayor of 1953 to 1977.

It was a question for the PS of being maintained with the capacity in this stronghold by introducing the candidate Jean-Louis Fousseret tandis the line intended to benefit from the environment of fine of reign of the team in place to tear off this fortified town with the opposition, with like principal outsider in this role Jean Rosselot (RPR). The countryside, calm and somewhat tedious, crystallized around the file of the TGV the Rhine-Rhone: the Greens and the federalistic Parti pled so that the first mixed new line (passengers/freight) rather passes by a station in the city than by a new station built to fifteen minutes of the center, more functional.

The Socialists finally succeed in being maintained with the capacity but not without sorrow: indeed, with the first turn, the candidate of the Greens Eric Alauzet creates the surprise while seeing himself credited of more than 16% of the voices and could thus claim to be maintained to the second turn. The victory was possible after rough negotiations in the interval turns to draw up a common list where the Greens made sure the presence of thirteen candidates (on a total of 55) including ten in position the eligible ones, and in the event of victory, they negotiated three posts of assistants, four deputy advisers and made promise to the socialist candidate the organization of a local referendum on the question of station TGV. The republican line, whose cumulated score of the two candidates did not even reach that of the PS to the first turn (30,40% against 32,71%), also carried out a fusion of the lists in the interval turns, the candidate of DLL being withdrawn in favor of the RPR candidate.
