Municipal election of 2001 in Strasbourg

These municipal elections was the theater of the political confrontation of Catherine Trautmann (PS) and of the tandem Fabienne Keller - Robert Grossmann (right). The line carried it, putting an end to the socialist interlude with the head of Strasbourg.

In 1999, strong tensions had appeared in the left of Strasbourg. The return of Catherine Trautmann in the local political life, mayor re-elected with the first turn in 1995 then minister of the government of Lionel Jospin starting from 1997, was not taste of Roland Ries, mayor in exercise at the time of the absence of Catherine Trautmann. This one, supported by Jean-Claude Petitdemange, a figure of the local left, was opposed to rehabilitation full and whole of Catherine Trautmann in her functions of mayor. An agreement was found and with the beginning of the year 2000 Catherine Trautmann could take again the presidency of the Urban community of Strasbourg, while Roland Ries kept the armchair of mayor.

This episode threw the disorder and led to the scission of part of the left taken along by Jean-Claude Petitdemange. The maintenance of this last to the second turn of the elections combined to the disorder sown in the left of Strasbourg make say to the specialists who this scission within the left is the cause of the victory of the right-hand side in 2001.
