The Munchkin is a Chat whose principal characteristic is to have very short legs. One often compares it with the basset hounds. Its small size does not result from genetic engineering, it is the fruit of a natural change.
Origin
Munchkin is a recent race. It is in 1983 qu ' éleveuse of Louisiana, Sandra Hochenedel, collected a black she-cat with the short legs, named Blackberry; this one gave rise to several kittens of which the half had the change shortening their legs. All Munchkins current would go down from Blackberry. The name of Munchkin comes from the film the Magician of OZ , whose heroin meets people of humanoïdes of small size named Munchkins.
The race is not recognized by many cat-like associations of which the Cat-like International federation and the Governing Council off the Cat Fancy (GCCF); indeed, these associations consider that it is about a genetic disease which should not be the subject of a selective breeding. On the other hand, the TICA recognizes Munchkin like a race with whole share.
Genetic aspect
The Gene responsible for the change " legs courtes" is dominating, and if it is present in double specimen, the fetus makes nonviable. All Munchkins thus have a specimen of the mutant gene Munchkin (noted M for the example) and a specimen of gene giving of the normal legs (noted m ).
At the time of the crossing of two Munchkins ( mm ), one thus has:
- 50% of chances to have a kitten Munchkin ( mm )
- 25% of chances to have a normal kitten ( mm )
- 25% of chances to have a nonviable kitten ( MM )
If one crosses Munchkin ( mm ) with a normal cat ( mm ), one a:
- 50% of chances to have a kitten Munchkin ( mm )
- 50% of chances to have a normal kitten ( mm )
Morphology
The principal characteristic of Munchkin is the small size of its legs. For the remainder, it can resemble all kinds of cats in version " basset" , and there exists of Munchkins with long or short hair.Contrary to the basset hounds, Munchkin is not prone to the problems of spinal column.
Character
Munchkin is famous to preserve its character of kitten once arrived at the adulthood. It is a very sociable cat, with the rather gregarious temperament. It is generally active and the size of its legs does not prevent it from running.
