Geography
Munchhausen is a small commune being located between Lauterbourg at north (while passing by Mothern, the close village nearest) and Seltz at the south, with the mouth of the the Rhine and the Sauer. The village consists of two parts:
- the high-village, which overhangs the low-village of about fifteen meters.
- the low-village, built on the old bed of the Rhine. This one is protected from raw from the river by dams.
When one goes towards the west in direction of Wintzenbach, one climbs after 600 to 800 meters of the village a hill which is a culminating point. This hill is called the Winzenbacher Buckel (the back of Wintzenbach ). From here there is a sight on the valley of the close Rhine as well as the close cities and villages - Mothern, Seltz, Schaffhouse-near-Soda - and more distant - Plittersdorf, Steinmauern, Rastatt - and finally on other bank from the Rhine until the Black Forest.
History
Munchhausen was formerly a village of fishermen. One can see fish besides on his blazon. The name of the village evolved/moved through time. In the beginning, one could thus see for example Menihusa. The name can be broken up into two parts, munch hausen, which means " Houses of the moines".
