Multimodality

The multimodality indicates the presence of several different means of transport between two places. One speaks about multimodality between two places if one can connect them by ways borrowing of the different means of transport; for example the multimodality between two cities returns to the existence at the same time of a line of railroad and of a Autoroute.

The multimodality is distinguished from the concept of Intermodalité: one uses the term of Intermodalité to consider the combination of several means of transport during the same displacement.

It is necessary to note the recent inflection of the policies of transport on a European scale which tends to replace the concepts of multimodality and Intermodalité by that of Comodalité.
