Multi-party system

The multi-party system is the characteristic of a Political regime where the Right of association allows more than two left to take part in the political debates and with the election S. It is one of the bases of the Representative democracy.

The multi-party system implies that the authorities accept the political sensibilities which are foreign for him and their criticisms in his connection, it is a guarantee for the citizen of control of the official actions, with the free press, but also of freely being able to intervene on the political scene.

The multi-party system is to be more precisely opposed to the concept of Sole party, typical of the authoritative modes , and totalitarian. The “people's democracies”, like old the the USSR where current the Popular republic of China, are modes of democratic appearance, with the organization of elections to the Vote for all and the organization of public meetings, but cannot precisely be regarded as real democracies, being governed by sole parties. The existence of sole party implies a fort Centralisme and the disappearance of the nuance between administration and political circle.

In certain countries where the multi-party system is respected, like the the United States, the political spectrum is focused on only two parties, one speaks then about Bipartisme. It is necessary to distinguish the absolute two-party system, existing only in the United States, which consists of the representation of only two parties to the Parlement, of the widened two-party system, which is a situation where only two parties obtain sufficient majorities to be on the initiative of Loi S but where other minority parties sit at the Parliament and occupy of the local mandates, although they are confined with a secondary role (case of the the United Kingdom). The two-party system is partly explained by the methods of poll to the legislative elections and presidential.
