The mule is a male Hybride, of the family of the équidés , generated by a ass and a Jument. A female hybrid is called mule . Except exceptional case, these hybrids are sterile.
One distinguishes:
- the mule of pack , used in mountain,
- the mule of feature , which renders the same services that a Cheval in other areas would return.
This name indicates, by extension, any animal of mixed blood, resulting from the crossing of two close species.
Characteristics
It is a robust, sober and patient animal.Physical characteristics most notable sont :
- not easily fertile (chromosomes resulting from two close but different species),
- often larger than an ass,
- dress (peeling) often alezane, bay or black, more rarely gray,
- bulky and lengthened head,
- little dilated naseaux,
- long ears,
- arcades prominent sourcilières,
- fine and dry members.
The mule and the mule draw like advantages:
- of the horse, a greater force and a bigger size than the ass;
- of the ass, a greater sobriety and a greater robustness vis-a-vis the diseases.
Etymology
This name comes from the Latin word mulus .

Various expressions refer to the mule:- charged like a mule to speak about a very heavy burden,
- obstinate like a mule which says itself of a very obstinate person,
- the mules of Marius , a nickname who indicated the Roman legionaries obliged to carry their equipment for the camp and their supply, transport ensured before by the mules; to decrease the temptation of an attack of the enemy on the train transporting this equipment and to increase the mobility of its troops, it made pass the load of the mules to the legionaries;
- the mule charged with gold of Philippe recalls, him, the irresistible power of gold.
