Muiron

Muiron is the frigate that Napoleon will borrow the August 23rd 1799, to return to France, after the Campagne of Egypt, giving up with the general Kléber a decreased and sick army. It was named thus in homage to the sacrifice of the colonel Jean-Baptiste Muiron, who threw himself in front of Bonaparte, covering it with its body to protect it, at the time of the Bataille of the Bridge of Arcole.

History

The catch of Muiron

Still in construction when Napoleon took the Arsenal of Venice, the November 15th 1796, Muiron was a frigate of 44 guns. The young general, who needed buildings took possession then of it, and made it arm. The August 26th 1797, it took the sea for the first time in the squadron which was to transport the task force, in Egypt.

The escape of Egypt

In 1799, Bonaparte must give up in Egypt a sick army and with end of force. The August 23rd, it embarks on its board, Alexandria, to return to France. After having succeeded in avoiding the frightening English fleet who awaited it in the Mediterranean, she managed to join the roads of Frejus. Since this moment there, Napoleon will dedicate a true worship with his frigate. In 1801, it takes part in the Bataille of Algeciras.

Muiron , a historic building

In a letter in the Minister for the Navy, written Napoleon: I wish that Muiron on which I returned from Egypt, is kept like a monument and is placed so that it is preserved, if it is possible, several hundred years…

One then anchored Muiron in the port of Toulon, and one added, in gold letters, on the hull: “ Muiron, taken in 1797 in the Arsenal of Venice by the conqueror of Italy. It brought back from Egypt in 1799 the saver of France ”.

The wish of Napoleon will not be respected with its fall and Muiron will be disarmed, and will disappear under conditions which remain fuzzy.

Reproduction of Muiron

In 1803, Napoleon made some carry out a model that it placed in its Study, in Malmaison. This model of a remarkable execution is exposed today to the Musée of the Navy of Paris.
