Muhammad ibn \'Ali Al-Sanusi

Muhammad ibn 'Ali Al-Sanusi, known as large Al-Sanusi (1787 - 1859), founder of the brotherhood Senussi (Sanusiyya) in 1837. Originating in Mostaganem, in Algeria, he preaches the return to Moslem orthodoxy. Installed with Mecque towards 1840, it leaves the holy places under the pressures of the Othomans. With the Cairo, it meets the opposition of the shaykhs of the university of Al-Azhar. It is then established with Tripoli (1843), where he becomes a close relation of the bey `Ali Ashqar, that he introduces into his brotherhood.

Returned of the Hedjaz in 1853, it founds a new center for its brotherhood, the Sanusiyya, at the border of the Libyan and Egyptian territories, in the Oasis of Djaraboud. This place of study, where an intense social life is organized, seen its population growing quickly and a true army to constitute itself.

Its grandson Idris Al-Mahdi became king of Libya.
