Muhammad Hamidullah

Muhammad Hamidullah is a theologist and enquiring Musulman born the February 19th 1908 with Hyderabad, in the State Andhra Pradesh in India of the South, deceased in December 2002 with Jacksonville in Florida. He is the junior by 5 sisters and 3 brothers. He is never marié.
He is mainly known general public to have been the first Moslem to translate the Coran into French starting from the Arab text in in 1959.

Studies

Hamidullah is graduate in International law at the university of right of Osmania, India, from which is resulting, for example, Indian the Prime Minister Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao. He studied the Islam in the institute, one of the most important institute of Islamic studies of India, which wants to be comparable with the university Al-Azhar of Egypt from the quality of the lesson which is lavished there.

Muhammad Hamidullah speaks twenty-two languages, of which the Ourdou (native tongue), the Indonésien, the Arab , the English, the Turkish , the Italian , the German , the French. It begins the training of the Thai at the age of eighty-four years.

Course

After the invasion of Hyderabad by the Indian army of 1948, Hamidullah is exiled in France where it remains until in 1996, date on which it leaves to the the United States for health reasons. It is integrated as researcher into CNRS of 1954 with 1978 where it takes part in research on the Orientalisme at the sides of Louis Massignon and Jacques Berque to which it brings contradiction.

Distinctions

He receives in 1985 Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the highest civil distinction of the Pakistan. He refuses the honor and asks that the amount of money (23 000 euros) associated be transferred at the Research center Islamic of Islamabad.
