After the departure of the French, at the time of the Forwarding of Mexico, refusing to abdicate, Maximilien de Habsbourg chooses the town of Querétaro to face the troops of Benito Juárez.

Last city before the capital Mexico City, while coming from north or the west, from where arrived the republican troops, Querétaro could easily be put in defense.

The February 19th 1867, the emperor arrives there, and reviews of it “regrouping” of the imperial forces which amount to 8 or 9  000 men. In spite of a plan of offensive decided the February 26th, the imperial army remains on the spot. And the March 5th the seat begins.

The republican army of the General Escobedo, included/understood American mercenaries and had the material given by the the United States of America after the American Civil War which had just finished. Their forces rise then with 40  000  men.

The engagements begin the March 12th. They are particularly hard the 14 and the 17.

The 22, the general Márquez are sent to quérir reinforcements in Mexico City. It will not return in time.

The April 10th, Maximilien gives a festival to celebrate the birthday of its acceptance of the throne.

The “last confrontation of scale” took place the April 26th.

The May 14th Maximilien decides an exit to join Mexico City. It is in the night of the 14 with the May 15th that it was betrayed by the Colonel Miguel López, which lets the republican forces seize the imperial cuttings off, thus allowing the catch of the city without combat. Maximilien is then stopped.

He judged, is condemned to died the June 14th and shot with the generals Mejía and Miramón the June 19th 1867. Its execution gave place to a famous illustration of Edouard Manet, the execution of the Maximilien Emperor of Mexico , carried out as of 1867.
