Muds and lanterns
Under the Old Mode, the tax of the muds and lanterns are due by the Parisian owners for the cleaning of the streets and the maintenance of the lanterns.
This tax was decided by the Parlement of Paris in 1509. Until the energetic action of the general Lieutenant of police force Gabriel Nicolas Reynie the public health and safety left something to be desired in the capital. In 1757, the owners can repurchase themselves some by paying 20 annual installments.
