Mtskheta (in Géorgien: ka მცხეთა) is one of the more old cities of Georgia. Located in the province of Karthlie, in the east of the country, close to Tbilissi, Mtskheta of the kingdom géorgien of Ibérie of IIIe front century J was the capital. - C. at the 5th century. It is in Mtskheta that Géorgiens started to convert with the Christianisme; the Catholicossat-Patriarchate of all Georgia is still based there.

The cathedral of Svetitskhoveli (of the 11th century) and the Monastère of Jvari (6th century) are among the most important monuments of Christian architecture géorgienne. One can find also there the Forteresse Armaztsikhe (of IIIe front century J. - C.), the Acropole of Armaztsikhe (9th century), the remainders of a royal palace (Ier - IIIe centuries), a tomb of, the monastery of Samtavro (11th century), the fortress of Bebris Tsikhe (14th century), Insitut of archeology, and the garden of Mikheil Mamulashvili.

The historic buildings of Mtskheta are on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO since 1994.

It is the administrative center of the area of Mtskheta-Mtianeti and is twinned with Leuville-on-Barley (France).
