Mr Albert (Valérian)

Mr Albert is one of the main characters of the series of cartoon Valérian and Laureline created by Pierre Christin, scenario writer, Jean-Claude Mézières, draftsman and Evelyne Tran-Lê, colourist.

Description

About sixty, hair white, bearing white moustache and glasses, epicurean with a light plumpness always perfectly contained in a three-piece suit. Living a small house in Paris of the XXe century, it is there the corresponding one of Galaxity. Delicious man, jovial fellow, having entregent and filled of practical good sense, it can organize useful meetings. It helps Valérian and Laureline in all their terrestrial adventures and will also accompany them in some planetary or cosmic negotiations.

Creation

Mr Albert was created in the album Métro Chatelet direction Cassiopée of which it is one of the central figures of the diptych.

Mr Albert evolved/moved neither in its personality nor in its appearance.

We are in 1980 in Paris, Mr Albert investigation to give all useful informations to Valérian, it is initially introduced to us as a person who can take time to live: “ Tss, tss, not of irritation. It is the hour… see… of small a new beaujolais wine can be… ”, unlike particularly impatient Valérian : “ Eh well, it does not have there what to panic. Although the white dry, that makes too nervous in my opinion… ”

Even if it uses antiquated methods, it does not miss results: “ And my expensive pigeon-travellers, quite convenient them also ”, because it can find information near old knowledge, like Abraham Chatelard, philosopher of sciences and the myths, with which it does not fail to philosophize: “ Countered sensus ab sensibus repugnat ”

Mr Albert does not miss relevance to leave Valérian a compromising situation: “ This young man is my nephew… nice fellow, but remained a little… he adores the toys of science fiction, the disguises of cosmonauts and all these silly things… ”

In New York, Mr Albert , accompanied by Valérian , is awaited the airport by another of his/her old friends, Schlomo Meilshem, one of the best world specialists in the Kabbale and whereas this one invites them in its residence: “ mm… I bet that there will be stuffed carp… ”

After Laureline put an end to the operation destabilization and that Valérian returns to Galaxity the last but one word of the end will be for Mr Albert : “ However, I have can be underestimated the depth of this charming boy. ”

Spectra of Inverloch and the Lightnings of Hypsis

We are in 1985, like all the other characters of this history, Mr Albert tries to join Scotland in England in deliquescence. Nothing functions, everyone struck, of breakfast, not of taxi, not of plane, just a problematic train and in a compartment two old women English so british: “ a candy from Fortnum and Mason? I see that certain bastions of the England old woman resist still valiantly! ”

On the borders

In 1988, whereas Valérian has just succeeded in countering a Nuclear accident in the USSR at the Finnish border and that it is decontaminated in the icy water of a lake Mr Albert proposes to him: “ small a smørebrod with salmon with a drop of Aquavit for you requinquer, dear friend? ”

After a long way in the car, before a voyage in seaplane, Mr Albert by one night splendid: “ You go account which we are almost with the Northern Cape? The life is really interesting for a pensioner like me when he travels with you! ”

Subway Châtelet direction Cassiopée

Mr Albert invites Valérian in its Pavillon of the Parisian suburbs and Jean-Claude Mézières draws an interior well characterized. Valérian : “ It is… euh… vain on your premise… ” Mr Albert : “ isn't this? Practical also for work, follow to me… ” and Valérian discovers, an encumbered entry of piles of files, a Bibliothèque invaded of all kinds of sorters and books with wire tended between the walls to pin there documentation, an office with a work table on which throne glass of wine to half empties, a plate and covers and a box for pussy in the middle of an accumulation of files, a hut filled with material of Radioamateur refuge for the cats, a room with the bed demolishes where the daily press reigns as a Master and a garden refuge of carrier pigeons. All this astonishing scene is in opposition with the personality of Mr Albert , a man apparently quite informed and organized well liking the rather gastronomical meals.

Spectra of Inverloch

Mr Albert succeeds, in spite of the general strike, to take a train InterCity for the north of Great Britain to go to Inverloch. It finds a place in a first class compartment where two English are already installed, Gladys and Priscillia, which is alone the caricature of all the England hurdy-gurdy: “ For God' S sake, Priscillia, not of moanings! what would think your husband, fire Major Hewlett-Byrnes? we surmounted the war well! … and our country saw some of other, is not it true dear Mister… ”. All passes there, the candies from Fortnum and Mason, the Oporto out of age from Harrods and traditional the tea time in a charming scene.

the Lightnings of Hypsis

In the spaceship of Valérian and Laureline with the continuation of the forgery three chechmates Hvexdet but true spacecraft of Hypsis, in spite of the temporal jumps Mr Albert prepares a frichti XXe century, for those which have still courage to eat and that in a kitchen of XXVIIIe. This marvellous anachronism is well returned in the first box of each board.
