Mr. Bungle

Mr. Bungle is a group whose style is at the crossroads of many musical genres. One often classifies it in the category of the Rock avant-gardist.

Formed in 1985 in California by comrades of college, Mr. Bungle is composed at the time of its signature by Warner in 1991 of Mike Patton (song, keyboards), Trey Spruance (guitars, keyboards), Trevor Dunn (low), Danny Heifetz (battery), Clinton McKinnon (saxophone), and Theo Lengyel (saxophone). Mike Patton is in parallel singer of the group metal-fusion Faith No More, which makes it possible Mr. Bungle to gain in notoriety and to be signed by an important recording company, but slows down the production of the group which will produce only three albums in eight years.

The style of Mr. Bungle is recognizable with the brutal changes of rate/rhythm, style and environment within the same piece (with the manner of Naked City). With the confluence of many influences (Slayer, John Zorn, György Ligeti,…), the coloring of the albums evolves/moves gradually: the mixture of metal and ska of the beginnings leaves room to a tinted rock'n'roll of free jazz, then with a more pop music Their music remains however in margin of the traditional and difficult musical production of access.

The group was also pointed out by its shifted scenic performances. The members appeared disguised in a grotesque way, Mike Patton carrying a mask of leather (or latex), others disguised as women. For the round which followed the album Disco Flying, of long sequences were reserved for the improvisations the most extreme bruitists. The group will call this round the Théâtre of cruelty in reference to the concept of Antonin Artaud.

Its members do not intend any more to collaborate in the future, preferring to work with their personal projects: Fantômas, Tomahawk, and Peeping Tom, in particular, for Mike Patton, Secret Chiefs 3 for Trey Spruance, for example. Although there no was official press release announcing separation, Mike Patton announced in an interview given as a member of Fantômas towards 2005 that " Mr. Bungle does not exist plus".
