Abbey of Mozac

See also: Abbey of Mozac

The Abbaye of Mozac, which was founded at the 7th century by Saint Calmin, was until the Révolution one of most powerful of Auvergne, with forty priories in the province of which, for most important, Marsat (convent of moniales), Volvic, Royat, Saint-Germain-of-Ditches, etc the abbey of Mozac was attached to the Ordre of Cluny in 1095, during launching with Clermont of the first crusade, by the Pape Urbain II.
The Romance building was very damaged by earthquakes at the 15th century. The chorus, the Transept, the southern side and the Cloître were restored by the Abbé Raymond de Marcenat, in a new architectural style, the Gothic , and by using a material only known since the 13th century, the Pierre de Volvic. The fallen elements with ground, like the many Romance capitals, in Calcareous, were employed again in the Gothic rebuilding. Thus, about thirty capitals of the 12th century were discovered and are exposed today in the concise museum contiguous to the église.
Only the northern side (visible frontage since the street) and the nave remained of the destruction. On the columns of the nave, forty seven Romance capitals make of Mozac a high place of the Romance sculpture, like Conques, Autun or Vézelay. The abbey church adopted a basical plan and by its architecture could have been classified among the major buildings of the Romanesque art auvergnat as well as Issoire, Notre-Dame of the Port, Saint-Nectaire and Saint-Saturnin.

The commune of Mozac adheres to the Federation of the sites clunisiens, association European which deals with the promotion of the historic sites which depended on the Ordre of extinct Cluny to the Révolution.

Classified " Historic building " in 1840, the Abbaye of Mozac is especially regarded as a " site emblématique" in the Great European cultural route, label decreed with the Federation of the sites clunisiens by the the Council of Europe.

Administration

The commune of Mozac officially was instituted on February 24th 1790 gathering both Paroisse S of the territory mozacois depend on the abbey: Saint-Paul and Saint Martin's day. These two churches are removed by decision of the bishop on November 4th, 1791. The last six Moine S leave the abbey whose church becomes only village, becoming the " saint-Austremoine" parish;.

Moz' ac' , it would be thus the place of Mo ; this prefix would come from Musiacum , “ the place of the Muses ”. Another toponymic definition is also advanced: “ placed in the middle of water ”, considering the big number of brooks (White Ambène, Mills…) who would have to determine the establishment of the abbey in this place.
  • One can thus name the inhabitants Mozacois (Mozac) or Mozadaires (Mozat). A popular distinction called Mozadaires any person who was originating in Mozac; Mozacois being then new inhabitants.
