Moyenmoutier

Moyenmoutier is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.

Its inhabitants is called Médianimonastériens.

Geography

The principal agglomeration (the Center) occupies the low part of the valley of the Rabodeau, at the average altitude of 320 Mr. In the middle of a Agglomération associating it with Étival-Clairefontaine, Voivre, Old man-Mill, Senones and Small-Raon the, the city is at 17 km of the Saint-Dié-of-Vosges, at 76 km of Nancy and at 85 km of Strasbourg by the Col of Hantz (641 m). History

The etymology of the name of the commune is obvious: the monastery ( moutier ), founded in 671 by Holy Hydulphe, was located between those of Senones at the east, of Étival in the west, Saint-Dié in the south and Bonmoutier in north. This unit forms what one names since the modern time the Croix Crowned of Lorraine .

In 915, the cruel Hungarians and hordes plundered and set fire to the abbey which was rebuilt towards 960. At the 12th century, Aubert de Paroye builds on the rock of the High-Pierre a castle which was destroyed at the next century, on the order of the duke of Lorraine.

The monastery rate/rhythm the life of the local community and undergoes the vicissitudes of the centuries which pass. The mode of the Commende leaves it in a sad state at the end of XVIe century. The commendatory abbot of then, Eric of Lorraine, which is also abbot of the monastery Saint-Valve of Verdun and bishop of this same city, undertakes to give again a regular life with the monks of his houses. He entrusts the reform to Dom Didier of the Court. In 1604, the pope Clément VII approves the constitution of the Congrégation of Saint-Valve and Saint-Hydulphe whose heads are the two abbeys of Saint-Valve with Verdun and Moyenmoutier. Taking part fully in the movement of the catholic Counter-Reformation, this congregation will give rise to the French congregation of Saint-Maur, remained much more famous. The XVIIIe century is the golden age of the abbey with as professor of philosophy and of Scriptures Dom Augustin Calmet celebrates it which will become abbot of the monastery close to Senones. The French revolution rings the knell of the life monacale and the noise of the machines replaces the song of the monks.

The commune knows one prosperous time at the 19th century and the beginning of the XX {{E}} thanks to textile industry. The crisis of this sector involved a demographic Net retreat.

Until 1982, Moyenmoutier was served by the Railroad of Rabodeau.

Inheritance

Abbey of traditional style preserved almost completely. The conventual buildings of the abbey, occupied and partly altered by the textile industrial activity, are still places from there and preserved rather well, although a fire devastated in 2005 the roof of their southern part.
Saint-Hydulphe Church of the 18th century. Vast vessel in particular sheltering stalls of the 17th century, it also conceals large organ, copies of an old instrument moved at the 19th century with the cathedral of Saint-Dié, where he undergoes in November 1944 the same disastrous fate as this building.
