The Drows , or black elves , are a race of elves in the Roleplay Donjons & Dragons . They appeared for the first time in 1981 in the Fiend Folio (the “register of the demons”). Drows seem to be based on the black elves, particularly the dokkalfar of Scandinavian mythology.
In the forgotten Kingdoms
The black elves deliver to the elves since unmemorable times a fatal war. Apart from their capacity with the magic, of their dexterity, and their pointed ears, these two people do not present many common points. The ones live in harmony with nature, in symbiosis with the trees, in the oldest and proud forests of these imaginary worlds, the others live in underground cities, fleeing the light, hating the vegetation. The ones control principal the Art S, appreciate the Poésie, and make Musique admirably, the others are characterized by bloody battles, and are usual Sacrifice S of elves. Lastly, the ones are good, generous, and honest, whereas the others are covetous, bad, and machiavelic.
Formerly the black elves lived on the surface, they were known under the name of Illythiir. Guided by Araushnee (which was called Lloth thereafter), which was then the elfic mistress of the chief of the Pantheon (Seldarine) Corellon Larethian, Illythiir started a war against their cousins elves while Araushnee tried to kill his/her lover helped of some other divinities. This revolt failed and Araushnee/Lloth, its divine allies and Illythiir were banished in Outreterre. Illythiir accepted the nickname of Dhaeraow then, which means “félons” into elfic, and which with the centuries became “drow”.
The company of the black elves is one of those where it is most difficult to succeed. In the black elves, in fact the females direct: matrons. They are with the head of the houses, which are devoted to fratricidal vendettas. When a dark house, all its nationals are pursued, and are condemned to the exile.
They adore the goddess Lloth spider (or Lolth), for whom they often make sacrifices. It is a wild goddess of the Pantheon of the Divinités of the forgotten Kingdoms, which requires of its followers blood for offering. They dedicate a particular worship to him and are very faithful for him.
But all the black elves are not also violent one, and some, although far from many, fled the despotic kingdom of Outreterre to gain a place and peace on the surface. Most known of these heroes is Drizzt Do' Urden, member of the city of Menzoberranzan, which was quickly disgusted by the actions of its people, and came to live on the surface, where it cut a solid reputation. It was indeed surrounded travelling companions, like Cattie-Brie, Wulfgar, or Bruenor Marteaudeguerre and traversed the North-West of Féérune. With Elminster, it is one of the most popular heroes of the Royaumes. It remains with the Val of North wind, in the east of the Backbone of the World.
Relatively recently, the black elves emerged on the surface, not in escape, but in full company of colonization, at least such is their goal. But the elves do not let themselves make and fight battle to defend their territories
