Movement militant Mauritian
The Mouvement Militant Mauritian (MM) is a political party Mauritian, having for symbol a heart. Founded in 1969 by Paul Berenger, Dev. Virasawmy and Juneid Jeeroobarkhan, this socialist party militated for more social justice and of equality in the company. It is Tuesday September 30th 1969 which the MM took truly its take-off when Paul Bérenger made publish in the daily newspaper the Mauritian a long article which can be regarded as the very first roadmap of this party on the political scene. So the MM was presented in the form of the alternate one to the government of national unit in place since the independence of the country in 1968
Emblematic figure of the party, Paul Bérenger will mark more the militants than his/her colleagues founders. The events of May 1968 in France, inspired the leaders and sympathizers of the MM to encourage a political revolution in the country at the beginning of the Années 1970. The climate of revolt and insecurity which reigned in the island in 1971 led the government Workers party Mauritian (PTr) to declare the state of emergency with for consequence the arrest and the imprisonment of the leaders of the MM during nearly one year. These events consolidated the idea of this party like the defender of oppressed in the spirit of the mass.
Dev. Virasawmy offered to the party its first electoral success at the time of a by-election. With the wire of the elections the MM gained more and more ground on the PTr coalition and its allies to culminate with a raid in all the districts of the island the June 11th 1982. The sociocultural context of the country made that even if Berenger were the unchallenged leader of the party, it was necessary to propose a Hindu candidate of the caste Vaisya, to be able to be with the capacity. The lucky one was Anerood Jugnauth, president of the party and lawyer of profession. Very quickly of the dissensions within the party and its partner with the capacity led to a break of the MM and the dissolution of the government in 1983.
Anerood Jugnauth formed the Socialist Movement Mauritian, MSM and gained the anticipated elections of the August 21st 1983, whereas Bérenger left in the Opposition with the MM. The party will only arise to the elections August 30th 1987 with Prem Nababsing as leader and Paul Bérenger as general secretary. Although having gained the strongest percentage of voice, the electoral system in force declared victorious MSM-PTr-PMSD alliance.
The party will join the MSM with the capacity in 1990 and both will gain legislative September 15th 1991. Following incompatibilities from point of view, there was a new break within the MM and the government. This time Ci Prem Nababsing and some elected officials decided to remain with the government of Jugnauth and started an legal action to seize the name, emblem and color of the MM. They were déboutés in court and formed a new party, Gather it Militant Mauritian, RMM, which amalgamated after some time with the MSM.
The MM being combined with PTr of Navin Ramgoolam to gain the elections, the history of repeated once again when Bérenger and his/her friends were constrained to leave alliance and retrouvèrena again in the opposition. Following a made agreement with Medpoint, the MM was combined one second time with the MSM of Jugnauth to gain the elections of the September 11th 2000. The Movement Militant Mauritian found with the capacity really the September 30th 2003 when its leader, Paul Bérenger became Prime Minister. For the first time a not-Hindu directs a government to Maurice, in spite of the multiple attempts to ruin this step.
The MM will lose the elections of the July 3rd 2005 with its ally of the MSM directed by the son of Anerood Jugnauth, Pravin, with the profit of Social Alliance, heteroclite coalition including PTr.
Most of the population Mauritian founded great hopes in the MM of Berenger, dreaming of a better life. But the economic imperatives and the international situation made that the leader of the mauves applied a policy contrary to what he preached in the Seventies and Eighties. The electoral punishment was without call.
