Movement for the democracy

The Mouvement for the democracy ( Movimento para has Democracia , MPD) is a political party course-verdien of liberal tendency center-droite, which was with the capacity of 1991 with 2001. He is member of the Internationale center democrat. With the African Left for independence Cape Verde (PAICV), it is about the one of the two principal parties of the country.

The MPD is in favor of free trade and an opened economy, as well as co-operation increased with the economic international organizations such as the World Trade organization or the Economic community of the States of West Africa.

The MPD enjoys the support of the islands traditionally for the wind ( Barlaventos , in the north of the archipelago). These last years, it also collected voices in the secondary cities of Leeward Islands ( Sotaventos , in the south). Its positions on the agricultural policy, shown to harm fragile local agriculture, make it unpopular in the rural areas.

At the time of the presidential election of the 11 and February 25th 2001, the candidate of the MPD, Carlos Veiga, was beaten with the second turn by Pedro Pires with a variation of 12 votes only. The MPD collected 44,02% of the votes to the legislative elections of 2001 and gained 29 of the 72 seats of the National Assembly. Veiga lost the presidential election of the February 12th 2006, again against Pires, with 49,02% of the voices.
