Mourre de Chanier

The Mourre de Chanier is a mountain located in the basin of the the Verdon and the Préalpes de Digne, in the department of the Alp-of-High-Provence.

Geography

Mourre de Chanier is the top highest of Préalpes of the Verdon with its 1930 m of altitude, in front of its neighbor the Mont Chiran (1905 m).
The mountain has three tops: Mourre de Chanier (1930 m, in the east of the chain), Large Mourre (1898 m, in the west) and Small Mourre (1873 m in center-north). The three summit parts are connected a small plate called the Large Plain , limited by cliffs on the adret.

Geology

The rock is calcareous as in all the Préalpes de Digne. It dates from the Jurassic superior. The mountain appears starting from the genesis of the the Alps, 5 million years ago.

Park Natura 2000

Part of the solid mass of Préalpes of the Verdon east in a Park Natura 2000 called Throats of Trévans - Montdenier - Mourre de Chanier . Created in 2002 and vast of 8826 ha, it is in particular used to protect the remarkable floral richness from the place, in particular in cliffs. Mourre de Chanier has a great diversity of dry and steppe lawns which recover the mountain deprived of forest.
