In 1856, on the will of the emperor Napoleon III, the camp of Châlons was created on the grounds of Mourmelon and the surrounding villages. This decision was going to upset the life of this village which counted approximately 400 hearts. The camp was inaugurated in 1857 by the emperor who installed an imperial district there in order to remain the summer there. The creation of the camp involved an increase in the population (multiplied by three), a development of the trade (in particular coffees) and infrastructures. Several Heads of State made the honor come in Mourmelon: in 1896, it is the tsar Nicolas II of Russia and Felix Faure; in 1905, it is the king of Spain, Alphonse XIII and Emile Loubet; in 1962, the general De Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer and in 1975, it is Valery Giscard d'Estaing.
