Mounts héréens

The Mounts héréens ( Monti Erei in Italian), the Mounts of Héra , set up a mountainous group located in the center of the Sicily, mainly in the central parts and septentrional of the Province of Enna.

They are of calcareous origin, and do not reach particularly high altitudes. The zone was formerly one of most important world as regards the extraction of the Soufre, to which testify today interesting the mining parks scattered on the territory, among which the Mining Parc of Floristella and Grottacalda is largest.

The mountainous group is constellated with parks (among which the Lac Perguse, which, for very rich fauna (birds) that it shelters, is the seat of the first special Natural reserve installations in Sicily, and LLC Pozzillo, basin artificel the most extended from the island) and of natural reserves.

Because of the succession of broken reliefs, the population and the density of settlement are both reduced; not more than 200.000 inhabitants live in the zone. Inside the zone, however, is more the Italian big city with the top of 900 m altitude and the chief town of the province highest of Europe, Enna, where concentrates close to a sixth of the population of the zone of the Mounts héréens.

The mountainous group is crossed by a highway, the A19 connecting Palermo - Catane, and by a Railway according to the same course. The major part of the other roads which cross the area are characteristic by their big number of turns, which had with the aspect broken of the territory, and geologically unstable.

The natural heritage of the Mounts héréens one of is best preserved and one of richest of the island. Attractions of the zone are the Ville S presenting of Enna, Piazza Armerina and Nicosia; archaeological zones of the hellenized indigenous citadel of Morgantina with the Agora and the Greek Theater, the Villa del Casale, inheritance of humanity UNESCO for its priceless mosaic Roman, the Roman archaeological zone of Centuripe with the prestigious archaeological museum.
