Mount of the Larks

The Mont of the Larks is a top of the Vendée culminating with 232 meters located close to the Puy of Insane the and the commune of the Herbiers. One reaches the top by the Trunk road 160.

Its name originates in the Roman legion of the Lark which establishes a camp there

In XVIe century, 7 windmills were built there. Only three remained but only one still functions.

During the Guerre of the Vendée (1793-1796) the mount played a decisive part. It made it possible to know since the hills of the neighborhoods the enemy movements thanks to the position of the wings of the mill.

One also finds in top of the mount a Chapelle built at the XIXe century on the initiative of the duchess of Berry. Left a long time unfinished, this vault was finally inaugurated on April 28th, 1968.
