Presentation
The Augustine belongs to the Ceinture of fire of the Pacific. It is the youngest volcano of the Alaska, its first eruption going up with 25 000 years. Its activity is explosive, of Pelean type and summarizes with emissions of volcanic clouds and plumes volcanic. Its andesitic Lave formed the volcano by an accumulation of domes of lava and deposits of Tephra S and lava. Periodically, of major collapses (eleven in the last 2 000 years) give a new aspect to the volcano. The last of these collapses occurred in 1883 and generated a Tsunami nine height meters.Although the island and the coasts neighborhood are uninhabited, it is considered dangerous, in particular for the air traffic the United States - Asia passing in the area. The volcanologic Observatoire of Alaska supervises it.
Eruptive history
Eruptions occurred in 1812, 1883, 1885, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1908, 1935, 1944, 1963, 1971, 1976, 1986, 1988, 1998 and the last in 2006.The eruption of 1976 projected a volcanic plume with ten kilometers of altitude and powdered with ashes the town of Anchorage.
The eruption of 1986, envisaged by the observatory volcanologic, emitted plumes of ashes up to twelve kilometers of altitude and the volcanic clouds which caused a nine height meters tsunami on the peninsula of Kenai. During this eruption, the volcanologists Katia and Maurice Kraft unloaded on the island and managed to approach and film the volcanic clouds more close whoever had not done it.
The Lave emitted by the Augustine is a series Andésite - Dacite calco - Alcali low in Potassium and rich in volcanic Verre.
