Our village owes its origin at the Gallo-Roman period. A villa, called “Montano”, claims the tradition, was built by the Romans, along the Mont road in Xermaménil. Remains of pottery, fragments of vases, coins (gone back to 110 to 192 after J.C.) were found in 1911.
Mount on Meurthe entirely was burned and destroyed by the Swedes in 1675. “Makes some, the date corresponds to an episode of the release of Holland of the Spanish presence. The war known as of' Holland' was not only Dutch but also French, because the king of France, threatened of surrounding by Spain, fought against the Empire. On this date, Mont on Meurthe belonged to the Saint Worsens Romain Germanique and the duke of Lorraine (future emperor) was in open fight against the king. What means that they are the soldiers of king de France who burned the village and not the Swedes. Sweden had withdrawn its armies since 1634 and had never ventured also far in Lorraine (Thirty Year old War: 1618-1648). In 1675, it was interested rather in Poland which was much closer. ” (Historical Details brought by a pleasant historian, Mr. Denis L.)
There remained only two households in 1712. It is towards 1768 that the population increased with the arrival “from abroad”. The ground of mount belonged to different Lords. From this time, there remains today only the “castle” with occupants going down from no seigneuriale family.
Mount was going to know the pangs of the war again. August 24th, 1914, the village is bombarded, its destroyed bridge, 13 burnt houses. It will be rebuilt and only some dwellings still carry the marks.
With regard to war 39-45, Mont suffered like all the common neighbors: Deprivations, deportation, unfortunately the usual batch during this time of conflicts. Once more, its bridge on Meurthe jumped the last year of the hostilities.
And our church in all that?
Already in 1259, it was quoted but its origin would be even more remote.
First vault in 1347, dedicated to Saint Césaire. One second in 1535, undoubtedly placed under the term of Notre Dame of Pity. Nowadays, Saint Aignan protects it. The museum of the church, too little known, too little visited, us always reveals the statues of them.
When with its Furnace bridge!
18th century, given in value thanks to one of our former priests, the Father Louis THIAUCOURT knew challenged the Commune and by this skew the Historic buildings. Now, Mont on Meurthe holds an original and single part in the area.
Nowadays, Mont on Meurthe is not any more what a local poet missing for two decades had protested.
He wrote:
It is a pretty village
On the side of a slope
It is reflected in water
Of quite wise Meurthe
It groups all its fires
With the entour of the Church
Where under the gray stone
Rest Aïeux.
Many allotments doubled its population and that in the years 1980. Unfortunately, these new constructions too far away from the communal cradle broke “the parochialism”. It is a fact, for many inhabitants, to make its races with Lunéville or Blainville is faster, if not simpler than to return to the foot of the bell-tower, where some tradesmen exerted 20 more years here are.
To say that the village became a dormitory town, would upset much Mons; but it should be recognized, the reality of the life: employment, work, care, trade, oblige to admit it. With each one of us to react and give again a heart with this current life, materialist and egoist.
But what makes our Mons of their day?
Many leaves the commune working outside. Many are at S.N.C.F. a small artisanal zone, 4 companies disseminated in the village: painters, mechanic, hairdresser in residence, masons, roofers, nurse, fitters in T.V…, enter a relatively important labor.
Four farms always perpetuate the rural character of the commune.
For that, it is necessary to add the Community of Emmaüs created in 1980 by the PIERRE Abbot. Twenties to twenty five people find their balance by manual work there. Everyone on the occasion to cross their vehicles furrowing the area.
And of course pensioners activating themselves in calm beneficial shores of Maurthe and Mortagne, and also enjoying the presence a doctor on the spot.
New Parish: Why not! It is made thing besides. The occasion is not this step to find themselves more many with the Offices and to involve those and those which do not know that it can exist a Christian community with the listening of the difficulties and hopes of each one. That each Mons or Mons is convinced that there exists in their village of the Christian movements which only require to help. These movements are “with listening” and will be made a duty communicate concern and desires with the Father Bernard, Curé of the parish. Our Internet site is rich information: let us use to get information, dialog and thus recreate a spirit, spirit which will make that it will be the different one initially. All will go better then for oneself.
That the Mons benefit fully from their village: it made good things in life there since of 600 hearts in the years 1980, the population passes very close to the 1000 inhabitants now. That they are increasingly fraternal and that they do not hesitate to contact the parochial persons in charge. Many associations also exist with mount where each one can, according to its tastes or desires, to find a blooming personal.
Each inhabitant will be able to then endorse this quotation drawn from the book of Jacques de Lacretelle “the inherited landscapes”:
The City has a figure, the countryside has a heart.
