Mount-Saint-Hilaire is a city of the Quebec (Canada), located in the regional Municipalité of county of It Valley-of-Richelieu the, in the administrative area of the Montérégie. It is named in the honor of Hilaire of Poitiers, Doctors of the Church.



Geography

The Rivière Richelieu separates Mount-Saint-Hilaire from the town of Belœil. Mount-Saint-Hilaire is located at the foot of the Mont Saint-Hilaire, which, in 1978, is recognized by UNESCO like the first Réserve of biosphere in Canada.

History

Jean-Baptiste de Rouville is the first lord of the area in 1694. There is formation of a village in the mountain in 1745. The first vault is built in 1798, close to the Richelieu river. Nearly twenty years later, in 1822, a vat makes it possible to pass from Belœil to Mount-Saint-Hilaire. The bridge of the railroad, which connects Belœil and Saint-Hilaire, is built in 1848 by the Saint-Lawrence and Atlantic Railway . The family Campbell, owner of the mountain after that of Rouville, sells the mountain to an English officer: the Sergeant Andrew Hamilton Gault, it protects the mountain during 45 years. Then Gault bequeaths the mountain to the Université McGill before dying, in 1958.

Saint-Hilaire mount

The Saint-Hilaire mountain is old of 124 million years. It contains more than 600 species of plants and more than 10.000 specimens of minerals. It holds the title of Reserve of the Biosphere, a title given by UNESCO in 1978.

Personalities

  • Ozias Leduc, one of the most important painters of Quebec, was born in Mount-Saint-Hilaire.

  • Paul-Emile Borduas, Québécois painter and principal signatory of the total Refus was also born in Saint-Hilaire.
  • Jordi Bonnet, painter, ceramist, muralist and sculptor, lived in Saint-Hilaire.
