Mount-Hélanus

Mons-Hélanus

The mount-Hélanus is the symbol of the ancient Aubrac, it would be one of the three tops among the Trucs of Aubrac and the Puy de Gudette of the southern part of Aubrac, it is not known yet if its celebrity comes from her position creating a terminal on the plate, or of the presence of a lake of the same name where was practiced a pagan rite, which at the time of the evangelization of the area was substituted by the worship of a saint. A church was built close to this lake (the church of saint-Hilaire). But a detail is turbid, it is the fact that the Romans called a top of the " type; Trick " , Mons. This name is generally hold at an overcome top of edges or a rock part, then only the Rock of Campiels, the Peak of Fourques, and Peyrou could be named thus. First is located at the entry of the forest of Aubrac not far from the famous Romaine way which crosses this one, joined Saint-Chély-with Aubrac in the south and goes up towards the Lac Saint-Andéol and of the Lac of Salhiens, in north, not far from the Cascade of Deroc close to Nasbinals, Peyrou is between the lake Saint-Andéol and the Lake Born, the Peak of Fourques is between the Lake Saint-Andéol and the lake of Salhiens.

Toponymy: Salhiens comes from Latin " Silanus" who means: waters running.

Gregoire de Tours

- Of gloria confess., course. 2): 'Mons erat in Gabalitano territorio cognomento Helanus, lacum habens magnum. Sic fiebat per singulos annos, and involvebatur insipiens populus in errore.

Strategic situation

This place of Aubrac is a crossroads between the three following areas: the Auvergne represented by the Department of the Cantal, the Languedoc-Roussillon by the department of the Lozere and the Rouergue by the Department of Aveyron.

It was thus a crossroads between the people of then, Arvernes, Gabales and rutenes, symbolized at the 6th century by their representatives of the Gallia-Christania who held a council to with it.

This famous council was immortalisé by the presence of cross-of-three-évèques

A will dating time from the Romain empire was to separate these people combined in Arvernes by unspecified means.

That leads us to think that Aubrac, on the part Is, starting from the Mount-Hélanus and to the Batch was Gabale, the Western part was Rutène and the corridor in Western north was Arverne (see chart of right-hand side).

and Adsilanum: where is it?
