Moumines
The Moumines are characters created by the Finnish Tove Jansson. It is about a family of nice trolls resembling hippopotamuses.
The Moumine Family
Moumines live in the valley of Moumines, imaginary valley giving on the Golfe of Finland. They seem to be reduced to only one family, made up of Dad Moumine, Maman Moumine and their Moumine son.
This last is the hero of several books of Tove Jansson, which starts to be interested in him in 1945 when it makes the hero of of them a comet to the country of Moumine , the first volume of the series: when a Comet approaches, it leaves with his friend Snif in the wild Hills to rejoin the observatory and to follow the progression of comet. They meet both Renaclerican, which becomes one of the recurring characters of the series.
The three friends discover the hat of a magician in Moumine the troll (1948), and at the end of the novel, Papa Moumine their bed his Mémoires , announcing the real publication of the Mémoires of Dad Moumine in 1950, centered this time on the youth of the father of Moumine.
Moumine ties a idylle with the Snorque young lady, who accompanies it since a comet with the country by Moumine until One winter in the valley by Moumine (1957), while passing by the dramatic Summer of Moumine (1954), at the time of the Fête of the Saint Jean. It however seems to move away some gradually, with the profit of timorés, more independent and original characters like Mume and its sister the Small one Driven, a faithful but unverifiable friend, or Tou-ticki, another friend who appears only in winter.
Last volume, Moumine Dad and the sea (1965), see the family giving up her dear house to settle in a Phare on a deserted island, strange retirement in the maritime loneliness, marked by the mysteries and the interrogation on oneself, whereas Moumines seemed casaniers and in love with the order, in spite of the adventurous youth of Moumine Dad. His/her son however tests an increasing fascination for the unknown and the other, the different one.
The books for children ensured the success of Moumines, but their notoriety especially extended thanks to the Cartoons carried out by the author and his brother, Lars Jansson, and the series of Animation, in particular a Japanese animated series of 99 episodes diffused in France under the title Moomins . There exists even an amusement park, Muumimaailma ( the World of Moumines ) on the island of Kailo, with broad of Naantali (south-western of Finland).
