Mottled Stictonette

The stictonette mottled ( Stictonetta naevosa ) is a Canard of the family of the Anatidé S.

Stictonetta naevosa is only the species kind Stictonetta . This aberrant species is often regarded as nearer to the Oie S and the swan S that Canard S. It is classified in its own subfamily: the Stictonettinae

Description

This bird measures between 50 and 55 cm, the plumage gray, is finely moucheté of white. The nozzle is long and turned up, very thick at the base. The base of the nozzle is reddish in the male, whereas it is entirely gray in the female.

Habitat

The mottled strictonette lives the south-east and the south-west of Australia. It is a wandering bird which attends the provisional water levels as well out of fresh water as brackish.

Biology

This species generally lives into small groups at the edge of the lakes where it is nourished by filtering water. The reproduction intervenes especially during the rain season, the nest is placed close to water.

Populations

It is about a rare species whose population is estimated at 20.000 individuals. The mottled stictonette suffers from the hunting and the drainage of the wetlands.
