Motorola ColdFire

Created by the company Motorola, the range of Processeur S ColdFire is known as of technology VL-RISC (Variable Length - RISC). In fact of Instruction set RISC to variable length, it is quite simply about the instruction set CISC of the family M68k (or more precisely of a subset of this one). Compared to processor like the PowerPC (famous RISC) and its instruction set complicated, the list of the opcodes m68k can appear of an extreme simplicity.

If the family m68k were classified in the form 680X0 , where X indicates the generation of the processor, the ColdFire range is classified in 5XNN , where X also corresponds to the generation and the NR make it possible to classify the various products of this generation. The first generation, was practically not diffused, it acted especially of a gallop of test, it included/understood the 5102, a chip 100% compatible with a 68EC040 (without DRIVEN nor FPU). This chip was distributed little. The second generation (5202, 5203,5204 and 5206) was more largely widespread, even if the members of this family had the great disadvantage of not including a unit of division. This deficiency was corrected in the following generations: 5307,5407 and their derivatives.

The processors of the ColdFire range are much more than of simple microprocessors, they integrate all logic to make complete embarked computers of them. It is in fact also Microcontrôleur S, they integrate ports series, parallels, timers, controllers of interruption, DMA, controller DRAM, decoding of addresses…

Processors of this range were or are still used in various walkmans mp3, in particular certain models by IRiver (model H1x0 and H3x0) and Cowon (model iAudio m3, M5 and X5).

“Freescale” is henceforth the new name of “Motorola semiconductors”.
