Geography

History

The name of Bréville or Brévilla appears in the historical documents since 1056.

During an invasion Norman, at the 10th century, a Norman chief would have been the first owner of the ground: Brae villa meaning the property of Brae or Brée . Of the same Bréhal would have the same origin: Brae aula meaning the field of Brée . The hamlet of Delles, located on the height, in the North-East of the church, would draw its name from the norois LED which means distributed patch of land and which one finds in the 3 Scandinavian languages mordernes.

In 1022, Richard II, duke of Normandy, granted the baronnie of Saint-Par the abbey of the Mount-Saint-Michel. The parish of Bréville then formed part of this vast concession. Besides one finds, in 1154, the name of Renaud de Bréville being reproduced on the list of vassal having to pay homage to Robert de Thorigny, abbot of the Mount-Saint-Michel. In 1302, Guillaume de Bréville is in dissension with the abbey of the Mount-Saint-Michel about the right of patronage (nomination of the priest). Its descendant, Jehan de Bréville becomes " then; patronus ecclesiae of Brevilla" with or without the support of the Bishop of Coutances.

Then, it is the One hundred Year old war. Jehan of the Pond , in the capacity as " temporal lord of Bréville" , the copy of the concession contresigns on sand, pitches it and the coastal marshes with the inhabitants of Bréville and the close parishes.

At the 16th century, the of Bréville seem to disappear and the seigniory of Bréville passes between the hands of Jean de Juvigny , lord of Saint-Nicolas-of-Wood (close to Brécey). Its descendants will have the sieurie of it during more than 200 years.

At the 17th century, Pierre de Juvigny exceeds his rights while deciding to adapt 10 orchards of mielles and marsh. But of unmemorable time, the dunes, moors and marshes of the baronnie of Saint-Par belong to the sieurs abbots of the Mount-Saint-Michel. Who more is, in 1238, the Richard brother of the Abbey had conceded the pasture of the marshes with the residents with perpetuity . This decision started the anger of the peasants brévillais amputees of their right of grazing ground for their sheep and cattle. Extremely fortunately, the justice of Roy, after a long lawsuit, gave reason to the peasants.

In 1785, Jean-Julien Ganne , lord of Beaucoudray, buys the seigniory of Bréville and its manor which it resells at once with Paul-Bernard de Mary de Longueville . In 2 years, Brévillais will know 3 successive lords ........ for recognizing any of it soon.

All these lords had as remains the Manoir of Bréville , located near the Château of Vau Tertreux, on the heights of Bréville and dominating the sea.

More close to us, Bréville was in the Fifties of last century, in seaside, parade ground for the troops confined with the point of the Rock of Granville, with in particular its field of fire used by the 3rd half-brigade of hunters to foot, become 21è BCP (battalion of hunters to foot) forming the young hunters for the war of Algeria.
