History and Legends
The origins of Motors ( balneum or balnoleum ) go up probably well beyond its Roman etymology and its water undoubtedly operated fortuitously more than one cure. With, the forging mills of Motors were however more known than its source and it is necessary to go back to find in documents some mentions of what one then called the “ fountain of Baignoles ”.
But according to the local legend, the origins of the thermal activity would date from the Middle Ages. The latter tells that the medieval lord Hugues de Tessé feeling that it reached the end of its life decided to give up his horse " Fast " in the Forest of Andaine. It was astounded when the animal returned a few hours later, extremely and completely revitalized. Without any resentment, " Fast " took along its Master towards water of Motors where after having drunk it was also renovated. The Thermal spa had been born.
According to another tale, a very old monk Franciscain who also had taken water of Motors to him found an astonishing news strength and jumped between the highest rocks located above the city. These rocks are always called " the Jump of the Capuchin ". Another facet of this attractive place are the legends arthuriennes, since Bagnoles and its surroundings are supposed being the country of Lancelot of the Lake. The calendar of the cultural events of the village includes a visit of the most famous sites arthur iens.
In fact, it especially since the 19th century that this commune is famous for its thermal establishments, formerly only medical but from now on is also turned towards the Thalassothérapie (13 000 curists per annum for approximately three weeks). Its tepid Spring water, which spouts out at a rate of 48m 3 per hour, is indicated for the affections in Phlébologie, Rhumatologie and Gynécologie.

The District " Beautiful Époque"
The district " Beautiful Time " of Motor-in-the Orne an example preserved rather well of constitutes what could be a residential allotment of the French middle-class of the beginning of the 20th century. Built between 1886 and 1914 and located in the southernmost part of the city, it is composed of superb richly ornamented villas.
Projects similar were developed in France to the same time, among which one can quote Vésinet close to Paris, the park of Saurupt to Nancy and the town of winter of Arcachon. The extent of the project of Motor-in-the Orne was considerable, the district reaching the number of 53 villas in 1907. This success can be allotted mainly to Albert Christophle, former minister for public works and governor of the building and loan association, which was one of the principal initiators of the project.
Retrospectively, the architectural opulence of constructions such as the villas " Printania ", " Simone " and " the Manor house " give an good idea of the taste eclectic and refined this time. They are the architect-manufacturers Leon Bénard and Alphonse Appert which share most of the Bagnolais market of the time.
It is clear that if the local model seems to be inspired by the Norman néo-regionalistic current such as one can find it in the stations of the seaside of " the coast fleurie" like Deauville, Houlgate or Trouville-on-Sea, there exists well an architectural style " Bagnolais" with no one another similar.

The American billionaire Frank Jay Gould, already owner of the Large Hotel, was interested of loan in the installation of the station and, following the example Albert Christophle during the Beautiful Time, invests himself personally in his development.
The most interesting examples of this type of architecture are the " Casino of Lac" built by the architect Auguste Bluysen and the church Saint-Jean-Baptist (1934-1935), which is registered today with the French inheritance of the 20th century. These two buildings succeeded in the bet to be integrated perfectly in the greenery of the landscape surrounding while adding a modern key of decoration based on the use of geometrical forms and of let us tons white.
