Mothman

Bully-the-Mines is a chief town of canton north of the France, in the department of the Pas-de-Calais (62), district of Lens. It belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of Lens - Liévin (Communaupole) which gathers 36 common, is 250  000 inhabitants.

History

The name of Bully changed during the centuries: Bulgi 1135, Bugi 1152, Builli 1157, Bullia 1198, Bully 1270, Boulli 1303, Buylly 1410, Builly-lez-Aix 1486, Builly-lez-Grenay 1511, Builly-in-Gohelle 1569, Bully--Gohelle 1709, Bully-Grenay 1750, Bully-in-Gohelle 1782 and finally Bully-the-Mines in 1925.

The name, according to several sources would be of Gallic origin. Ricouart advances that `' Bullire'' has just bubbled because of the Surgeon in the vicinity of its source with Aix-Noulette. The current terminology `' the-Mines'' is explained by the strength of the mining activity. The station kept the name of Bully- Grenay what involves sometimes confusions.

Although the area was inhabited as of prehistory nothing in Bully is found. The oldest discovery is a Celtic bracelet. On the other hand the discoveries Gallo-Roman S are numerous. Bully belongs to the `' Pagus Silvinus'' area administrative of the Atrébates, future the Gohelle.

To the 6th century, Bully is attached spiritually to the bishop of Cambric-Arras in residence with Cambrai and civilly to the primitive Artois, chief town Arras.

Bully, integral part of the Artois, underwent to him also the misadventures of his/her mother of 862 with 1191, it is the domination of the Counts de Flandre in 1191 takes place the passage in France until 1384 with direct government by the Crown of 1191 to 1237. Heurs and misfortunes of Bully

The vicinity of three fortified towns, Arras, Béthune and Lens, is often disastrous in Bully which is used as ground of combat or passage of the armies. In 1213 the village is devastated. In 1303 it is shaved, even the trees are cut down. In 1348 a third of the population dies of the Black Death. The plague will prevail still four times the next century alternating with Disette S and Guerre S.

In 1537 Bully is devastated by the troops of Louis XII which carry all and misfortunes will continue until the catch of Lens by the French in 1556-1557. The receiver cannot take any tax with Bully, so much the population is tested. In 1648 the village supports the presence of the armies for the Bataille of Lens.

Of 1709 with 1712 Bully undergoes the steps and contremarches armies at the time of the war of succession of Spain. The situation is worsened by a epidemic which made 24 deaths. In 1796 a fire destroys half of the village (in remembering a locality will be named `' Way flaring'').
