Mosque of the Shah
The mosque of the Shah مسجدشاه|Masjed-e Shāh is a religious building located at Ispahan, built for the sovereign safavide Shah Abbas Ier between 1612 and 1630. Its principal architects are Aldine Muhibb Al-Kula and Ustad Ali Akbar Isfahani. The building is also named Mosquée of the Imam , in reference to Rouhollah Khomeini.
Plan
The mosque of the Shah is built on the plane Iranian type, to four Iwan S around a court, whose main thing leads to a room under Coupole being used as room of prayer. With the vertical of the center of the large cupola is on the ground, a black flagstone. If you are on this flagstone, all this what you known as is repeated seven times (you very clearly hear seven times the echo). Beside large the room with cupola several small rooms under cupolas are known as “rooms of prayer of winter”. Two Madrasa S at court and two iwan are on the sides. A great symmetry is noted. The gate of the mosque, as in any Iranian mosque is a Pishtak, i.e. large a arc projecting. It rather deep, is surrounded by two Minaret S, like the principal iwan of the court. In order to be integrated in the urban program of Abbas Shah, it is aligned on the maydān (the Place Naghsh-e Jahan or places Khomeiny Imam), the immense place built at the same time which is also surrounded on its 3 others dimensioned by the palate of Ali Qapu, the Mosquée of Sheikh Lutfallah and the entry of the bazaar. This alignment of the gate on the axis of the place, whereas the remainder of the mosque is directed towards Mecque induces nonan alignment of prospect between the gate and the building, characteristic of this building.
Decoration
The decoration of the mosque is carried out in Céramique, according to various techniques: the mosaic ceramics , taken again period timuride, the cuerda seca, the haft-row… One often notes that the decoration is rather neglected on the not very visible parts, but very fine on the dome or the frontages of iwans. The dominant color is blue, but colors like the yellow and the green are rather characteristic of the time.
