Moshe Katsav (born the December 5th 1945) is a Israeli Politician , eighth president of the State of Israel, 2000 with the January 25th 2007, date of its suspension.
Born with Yazd, in Iran, it grows with Teheran then emigrates with its family in Israel in 1951. It joined the Likoud and becomes mayor of the small town of Kiryat Malachi. Then it is invested appointed with the Knesset.
Member of the government of Benyamin Netanyahou, it engages in the race with the presidency of the State of Israel against Shimon Peres, and is elected the July 31st 2000, by 63 votes against 57 for Peres. He is the first member of Likoud to occupy this station, as well as the first president of the State of Israel elected for a seven years mandate. He is the first president Mizrahim of the State of Israel as well as the first president born in an Islamic State. He lent oath it, approximately two months before the release of the the Second Intifada.
Since he is President, he implied himself politically. He supported in particular the plan fallen through of cease-fire of 2002 and refused it thanks to Ygal Amir, the assassin of the former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He also told how, at the time of the funeral of the Pape Jean-Paul II, he had sat beside the Iranian President, Mohammad Khatami for reasons of provisions of the international leaders alphabetically. Usually speaking the Persan, it thus could tighten the hand and dialog with Khatami, which would constitute the first public contact between Israel and the Iran since 1979. Khatami however contradicted formally.
“ My family lived during 2500 years in Iran. We acquired the Persian culture and infants in our heart of the very intense feelings for its history and its culture ”, he would have affirmed in 2003 during a radiophonic exchange with Juifs Iranian. Moreover, the majority of the members of her family are buried today in Iran.
In 2004, at the time of its visit in France, it declared in front of Jacques Chirac and of the personalities of CRIF that " It is France of Pétain which saved the most Jews during the guerre".
In 2006, Moshe Katsav is shown of rape on a former employee who affirms to be forced by the president to sleep with him, if she did not want to be laid off. It is also shown to have granted graces privileged to some condemned related to his political friends. The entourage of Moshe Katsav rejected these charges and certain Likoud deputies put forth the assumption of a plot “ aiming at disparaging the President .” Moshe Katsav carried felt sorry for blackmail, against its former employee. An police investigation was open in July 2006. These businesses could according to several observers, deputies of Likoud (left the president) or members of the Labor Party, to cost him his position of president.
In January, 30 deputies of the Knesset sign a petition asking for the departure of the president. The Israeli Minister for Justice Menachem Mazuz announces his intention to continue Katsav for rape, obstruction with justice and frauds on January 23rd and the following day, the Prime Minister Ehoud Olmert request in Katsav to resign. Katsav requires its temporary suspension of the position of president the January 25th 2007 and the suspension is accepted by a special subcommittee of the Parliament for one three months period. The president of the Parliament Dalia Itzik becomes president by interim until the taking of of Shimon Peres (elected on June 13rd), the July 15th 2007. During its suspension, Katsav keeps its penal immunity. July 3rd, 2007, he publicly admitted being a sexual delinquent.
