Moshe Dayan

Moshe Dayan (in Hebrew: משהדיין) (born the May 20th 1915, dead the October 16th 1981) was a soldier and a politician Israél IEN.

Its childhood

Moshe Dayan was born in from now on then celebrates Kibboutz Degania, located in Israel under Othoman domination, not far from the Lac of Tibériade. At the 14 years age, it joined the Haganah, in the rows of which it will be marked by the influence of Major Orde Charles Wingate, a British officer pro Zionist, and who will instill into the embryo of Jewish army the rudiments of modern war (combat of night, actions of guerilla).

Its first engagements

During the Second world war, he is imprisoned by the British forces during two years, then integrated in the 7th Division of Australian infantry, which fights the forces of Vichy in Syria. It is during this period that it loses the use of its left eye, by the depression of the sight of its rifle, reached by an enemy ball. Dayan will be decorated at the conclusion of the war, by the British army.

In Haganah

During the war of Independence of 1948, Dayan occupies several positions of responsibility increasing, in particular in the Vallée of the Jordan and in the area centers. Very appreciated David Ben Gourion, future first Prime Minister of the young State of Israel, it its will be protected, just like the young person Shimon Peres.

Moshe Dayan follows a fulgurating military career then, and becomes Head of State major of Tsahal of 1955 to 1958, in particular at the time of the war of 1956 against the Egypt.

Entry in policy

In 1959, Dayan enters in policy and joined the rows of the Mapai, the great Israeli left party. He is Minister for agriculture until 1964. Little appreciated Levi Eshkol, which replaces Ben Gourion after his departure of Mapai in 1965, it is however named minister Defense in 1967, to face the serious attack which threatens Israel.

The Six Day old War and the War of Kippour

Although not having taken share neither with the engagements, nor even with the planning of those (which are rather the work of the generals Yitzhak Rabin and Uzi Narkiss), Moshe Dayan was clearly identified like a dominating actor of the Guerre the Six Day old. It drew an enormous popularity from it, as well in Israel even as outside. This nonillegitimate glory must be balanced with the ell of the critics who will be addressed to him the shortly after the Guerre of Kippour. The excess of confidence identified in Dayan and which will live Israel during the six years which separate these two conflicts is indeed one of the reasons of the enormous losses undergone by Tsahal during the first days of combat. This bitter failure will cause a complete reversal of Dayan, which will be close evoking the fall of the 3rd temple, or the use of weapons of massive destruction to face what was announced like a possible Israeli defeat during the first days. But Dayan took again the top and led the Israeli forces to the victory, with the assistance of the the United States and of Israeli generals like Ariel Sharon.

Decline

The conflict of Kippour will start the moral one and the health of Moshe Dayan. It briefly withdraws political life in 1977, then returns for a short passage as Foreign Minister under the government of Menahem Begin. It will take part in the peace agreements of Camp David, and will die a little later in 1981, of a cancer of the colonist. It is buried in the Moshav where it grows: Nahalal.

Other aspects

Moshe Dayan is the father of Yael Dayan, former member of the Knesset, very strongly committed in the rows of peace.

Author of some works, Dayan was a famous archeologist in Israel, but also very discussed, number of his discoveries having left the public domain in infringement with the law. Its personal collection was sold in the State of Israel after its death.
