Morvillars

Morvillars is a commune of the Territoire of Belfort belonging to the canton of Grandvillars. The village, located between Bourogne and Grandvillars, is crossed by road RN19 and the way of Railroad which connect Belfort to Delle and by the small river Allaine . Its territory is bordered on a short distance by the channel of the the Rhone to the the Rhine.

Morvillars is quoted for the first time in 1322; the village has a church then. In 1347, Jeanne of Montbeliard-Ferrette inherits his/her mother Jeanne of Montbeliard of the stronghold of Morvillars-Méziré which becomes as from this time and until in 1648 an Austrian possession. The village is then quoted under the germanized name of Welsch-Morschwiller . Starting from the end of the 17th century, the industrialization of the area starts. Forging mills and a wire-drawing mill are built by the lord of the place, Pierre of Basinière. Thereafter one finds the names of ironmasters like Viellard and Migeon in the industrial society of the area. There remains currently the company VMC-Fishing, Viellard Migeon and Compagnie, which manufactures hooks since 1910, and some beautiful residences of the end of the 19th century like the castle Armand Viellard (photo opposite) or that built for Leon Viellard, both wire of Juvénal Viellard, one of the great figures of the economic history locale.
In 1803 Morvillars counted 331 inhabitants. The census of 1999 counted 965 of them.
