Hydrology
The flow of Morthe was observed for one 24 years period (1984-2007), with Saint-Broing, locality located at six kilometers of its junction with the the Saone. The catchment area of the river is there of 235 km ², i.e. almost the totality of this one.
The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Saint-Broing is of 2,34 m ³ a second.
Morthe present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow rather important, as it is almost always the case in the east of France, with high waters of winter-beginning of spring carrying the average monthly flow to a level located between 3,11 and 4,10 m ³ a second, from December to April included (maximum in January). As of April, the monthly flow drops gradually to the low waters of summer which take place from July to September, with a fall of the monthly medium flow going until 0,447 m ³ in August, which is still rather consistent.
With the low water level S, the VCN3 can fall until 0,16 m ³, in the event of dry period quinquennial, that is to say 160 liters a second, which is not yet too severe. The VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.
In addition the risings are seldom very important, which contrasts with other rivers of the area like the Ognon or the Durgeon which all things considered, are definitely more abundant, it is true. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 17 and 19 m ³. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is worth 20 m ³ a second, while the QIX 20 is assembled to 22 m ³. Finally the QIX 50 is assembled to 23 m ³ a second. (see note). The recorded maximum instantaneous flow was of 21,9 m ³ a second on November 14th, 2000, while the value maximum day laborer was of 20,5 m ³ a second the same day. By comparing the first of these figures with the values of the various QIX of the river, it appears that this rising was of a vicennial nature and thus by no means exceptional. One can consider that it is intended to repeat itself every 20 years on average.
The Lame of water past in the basin of Morthe is estimated at 315 millimetres annually, which is fairly high, of the same order of magnitude as the average overall of France all confused basins, but lower than that of the whole of the catchment area of the the Saone (501 millimetres). The specific Débit (or Qsp) is assembled consequently at 10,0 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
