Morris (data-processing worm)

The worm Morris or worm of Morris , sometimes called Rogue , is one of the first towards data processing distributed via Internet and launched the November 2nd 1988 starting from the MIT. He is regarded as the first worm and is certainly the first to have drawn the attention of the media of mass. This worm was written by Robert Tappan Morris, at the time student at the university of Cornell, which is today professor associated with MIT.

Structure

The worm Morris was not written to cause damage but to be propagated. Errors in the code however made it more dangerous: a computer could be infected more once and each additional process slowed down the machine at the point to make it unusable.

The worm Morris exploited two vulnerabilities known in Sendmail , Fingerd , and the weakness of passwords of certain users. The fault of sendmail was in the possibility, in mode “DEBUG”, to send files on a distant machine by using a Shell. This Shell was used for to compile the Source code sent. This once compiled program was then able to try to be propagated with other machines. The second fault used was a Dépassement of plug utility finger initially conceived to remotely know the hour of connection of a user on a station. This bug made it possible the worm to take control and to use the accesses network of the utility to connect itself to distant machines, and to migrate there as with sendmail
