Morotai
Morotai is an island of the province Indonesia of the Moluques of North. It is located at the North-East of Halmahera. Its surface is approximately 1.800 km ². The island is mountainous and glaze of forests. South-west is marshy.
History
In XVe and XVIe century, Morotai was under the influence of the powerful sultanate of Ternate.In the middle of XVIe century, Jésuite S Portuguese led by François Xavier establish a Mission there. Ternate expels the mission in 1571. At the beginning of the XVIIe century, Ternate off-sets the majority of the population with Dodinga, a small town on the west coast of Halmahera. In 1627 and 1628, the Hamzah sultan off-sets the Christian population of Morotai with Malayu with Ternate, to be able best to control.
During the Second world war Morotai was an air base Japan ease. The American forces take it in September 1944 and use it as starting point for an unloading of the Alliés to the Filipino at the beginning of 1945, and the east of Borneo in May and June of the same year. The Allies prepared an unloading with Java for October 1945 which was cancelled with the capitulation of Japan in August.
Population
The inhabitants of Morotai are primarily of Galela and Tobelo de Halmahera. Their languages belong to the family known as of the " Western Papou " Languages papoues.
Economy
The principal products of Morotai are the resins and wood.
