Famous characters

  • Pierre Bourgeade, novelist, poet and playwright. On its native village, he wrote:
" With the steps of the Béarn, Morlanne has been a village of three hundred hearts, perched for ten centuries, on one of these hills which, on the other side of full with the Gave, face the the Pyrenees. Jules César establishes a camp there where one can still meditate on the ambition, the history, the triumph of brambles and the nettles. Roman camp, like very other place of Morlanne, the eye dominates, in the south, a good third of the chain of the the Pyrenees; in the west, monotonous Moors; in the east, the turbulent Armagnac; in north, this confused, vast and dusty region, that Béarn highly civilized always dreamed to annex France. Gaston Phoebus left each day its citadel of Orthez, distant five miles, passed to the castle of Room-Piss where his/her cousins lived, and came in Morlanne to take the with its mistresses, while speaking about dream that Henri, wire of Jeanne d' Albret, was to finally realize. To visit Morlanne, it is to visit this dream, which seemed insane. I was born there, in the career which joint the church with the castle-extremely. In front of our house, where my grandfather, in addition carpenter, pressed the grape of vine, activated themselves, without truce nor rest, the carpenter, the blacksmith, it marshal-shoeing, the sabot-maker. In the garden, behind, I also looked towards these mysterious regions where I knew that one day I would go. Small Morlannais spoke patois at the house, Latin with the church, a single Master, at the elementary school, in charge of eight classes, taught to them, in an inflexible way, French. They are gondolent, today, when they learn that one can enter in sixth without knowing to read. The castle of Morlanne, which is visited, is rich many collections. The church, historic building of the 12th century, is a masterpiece of the surrealist art. It counts three turns, one round, the other square one, third pentagonal, by what the unknown architect seems to have transmitted a complex message, that he belongs to each one of déchiffrer"
