Moritz de Hadeln

Moritz de Hadeln (born the December 21st 1940) is director of cinema festivals of Swiss citizenship.

Born in Exeter (Great Britain), naturalized Swiss citizen in 1986, Moritz de Hadeln grew in Florence. After studies in France, it begins its career as photographer and documentarist: the Shovel (1963), Shades and Mirages (1966). In 1969, with his Erika wife, it founds the International festival of documentary film of Nyon, which it directs until 1979. From 1972 to 1977, he is also director of the International festival of film of Locarno, giving to this demonstration an international repute.

In 1979, of Hadeln is invited to direct the International festival of film of Berlin ( Berlinale ). It does of this festival one of organized best in the world. With the beginning of the year 1980, in spite of the Cold war, it succeeds in making cohabit Is and Western in this divided city. Untiring traveller, of Hadeln is one of the first to reveal the new Chinese cinema. Berlinale takes a new rise after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, in the capital of reunified Germany. In 2005, Moritz de Hadeln agrees to be the acting general with the programming of new the International film festival of Montreal (Canada) organized under the impulse of Téléfilm Canada and of SODEC by a regrouping of producers and distributers coordinated by the Team Spectra, more known for its jazz festival. Running up against competition and the polemics unchained by the other cinematographic demonstrations of Montreal, with the hostility of the local press as to the inexperience of the Spectra team in the field of the cinema, the festival been sulky by the public is balanced finally by an important deficit. The initiative intended to be given again with the Quebec a festival of prestige is soon abandoned. Moritz de Hadeln was member of “the Swiss Association of the realizers”, chair of “the International association of the documentarists” (AID) and member of the Council of the cultural foundation Allianz. He is currently member of the European Académie of the cinema (EFA). He was useful in many juries, in particular in Moscow, Montreal, Venice, Taormina, Teheran or Damas.

In 2001, Moritz de Hadeln founded in Berlin, together with his Erika wife, “of Hadeln & Partners”, a specialized company in the council as regards cinema and the organization of events.

In addition to many recognitions and homages in particular the price European to Strasbourg (2001), Moritz de Hadeln is Commandeur in the Ordre of Arts and the Letters (1986), Commandeur in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (1988) and Officer in the Order of Merit of the German Federal republic (2000).
